Meryl Streep leads an all-star cast in the feature-film adaptation of the beloved musical that has been seen by more than 30 million people in 160 cities and 8 languages around the world. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper join Streep in Mamma Mia - a celebration of a mother, a daughter and three possible fathers! An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Meryl Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited daughter she's raised alone. For Sophie's wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends - practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski) - from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own... On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna's past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities.

(08 December 2008)

There are so many things wrong with Mamma Mia, so many reasons it shouldn't work. And yet, somehow it does. Meryl Streep is dressed like a Playschool presenter, Pierce Brosnan can't hold a note and, in the first 30 minutes, there's barely any dialogue – just women of various ages squealing with excitement. It is truly awful. But, oddly, it is truly likeable — once the women stop their shrieking, of course. Mamma Mia, the film based on the successful Abba stage musical, is set on a Greek Island and tells the story of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), a young bride-to-be who discovers that three men could be her father then invites them all to her wedding, must to the horror of her mother (Meryl Streep). The men, Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard, accept the invitation then fumble about awkwardly for the remaider of the film – and I don't think they're acting. The women, however, are in their element and the highlight is an all-in rendition of Dancing Queen. Mamma Mia is exactly what you think it will be, and all the more fun for it.
